7月31日 George Carlin Is OffIn general I enjoy George Carlin, at least enough to watch him on Inside The Actors' Studio. Yes, it is truly enjoyable to watch a comedian not being "on", just giving it a rest, and showing a more sincere side of himself.
So when I mention that George Carlin is "off", I mean it as a compliment. 7月25日 The Big FizzleWell, I hope this isn't the big fizzle. I started Random Generation with at least one post for a nice long stretch. Then I skipped just alittle bit, then a bit longer...
I know I have stuff to share. Trying to keep it varied and light-hearted. One thing, just one - this can't be the big fizzle, maybe more like a fizzlette. 7月22日 Conflict of the Laconic Comfort>
First of all, a big thanks to the random Band Name Maker. It's where I got the title of this post, but it is not about strange band names.
It is a brief reflection on comfort. I think there would be a conflict with a comfort that was laconic. I like my comforts to be more long-winded, to continue the analogy. I prefer my comfort to be a novel, not an Emily Dickinson couplet.
Please excuse any esotericness, I'm trying to keep the generation of postings random.
If any of this makes any sense at any level to anybody, please explain it to me. Thanks. 7月18日 Mustang vs. CorvetteThe PremiseThese are fake battles that have been debated for years OR battles I would like to see.
The facts have not been checked for the most part. The victories are completely subjective. This does not mean the fights are fixed, just that it is all in good fun. Mustang vs. CorvetteMustang: introduced 1964 Corvette: introduced 1953 Point goes to: Corvette for longevity.
Mustang: muscle car (mostly) Corvette: self-defined Point goes to: Corvette for making the Stingray.
Mustang best model: 1964 1/2 (first model) Corvette best model: 1963 (split back window) Point goes to: Corvette. Come on, who else made a super-cool split back window.
Mustang: My wife's favorite car Corvette: My favorite car Point goes to: Mustang (I don't to sleep on the couch for an indeterminate amount of time)
Mustang: Made by Ford Corvette: Made by General Motors Point goes to: Corvette. Ford sounds like just one guy. General Motors sounds like he is in command of a whole army!
Mustang: Masculine and virile sounding name Corvette: Sounds French (I think it means "small corv") Point goes to: Mustang. Even though I think Corvette really sounds better, I do not want to upset my fellow countrymen.
Final score: Mustang 2 – Corvette 4
This means Corvette is twice the car Mustang will ever be. Just don't tell my wife I said so 7月16日 Lights! Camera! Recommendations!Wow! Even though I enjoy an occasional movie; I'm not what anyone would call a movie buff. I just found the Yahoo! Movies site. You can enter movie titles and rate them on an A+ to F (or you can think of it as 1 - 15) scale. After you rate a few movies it gives you recommendations based on your likes and dislikes.
I know NetFlix does this as well, but Yahoo! Movies does it for free. For newer movies, yahoo also shows a comparison of several critics' reviews. You can also view trailers, and write reviews of your own. Like I said, none of this is really new, but Yahoo! Movies does it really well. It kept this 'non-buff' busy for over an hour. 7月14日 Happy Bastille DayTo freedom fighters and promoters everywhere, I wish a hearty and happy Bastille Day! 7月13日 Fun With Names and JobsMake up a list of a few imaginary names and job titles for yourself. This can be great fun when meeting strangers.
Here's how.
1. Visit the Random Name Generator and create some names. It uses U.S. Census data to randomly choose names. You can choose how many, how common, and the gender. It's kind of fun to just play with.
2. Go to either the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, or the BS Job Title Generator to pick some job titles. The first one is an alphabetical listing of thousands of real job titles, and the second one makes up fake titles. Both can be fun.
3. Combine names and jobs, and memorize a couple of your favorites.
4. Use them the next time you meet a stranger.
Here are some I created, with no embellishmnet, using the steps above. (Any resemblance to real, fictional, imaginary, living, dead, tall, short, bald, or flabby persons or animals is probably unintended.) I'm thinking about using the next time the opportunity arises.
I can really see me doing this. I think the key is rehearsing, and getting comfortable saying them out loud. Please send along any good ones you come up with. Got One For The A to Z?I am still looking to complete the A to Z Blogroll. There will only be one blog per letter. I plan on updating the A to Z on a regular basis, so all suggestions are welcome. Send me your links - all topics and categories will be considered. (Remember even if I don't use your link, it will still be listed in the comments).
Also, I will make an appeal for more blogs about once a month to guarantee a fresh list. 7月12日 An Alliance For AllYep. Success Alliance is a small group right now, but the founder and I have something in common - we want to make improvements in people's lives. Right now the group is small, and that has advantages. Come and check it out.
I'm doing all I can to promote it. If you like it please spread the word. 7月11日 Georgia It IsI applied a random number generator to the encyclopedia on my bookshelf to get the topic for this post. Using the parameters it spit out the volume number (7) and the page number (132). So, like the title says: Georgia it is.
According to the entry in the New Book of Knowledge, Georgia was home to the first gold rush in the United States. Hmmm...learned something new today. It took place in 1828, predating California's more famous gold rush by twenty years. That's enough of the trivia, now on to personal reflections of Georgia.
I have been to Georgia on business trips a few times, and here are some thoughts. The high-rise hotels, specifically the Marriott and Hyatt, are very nice. Both hotels have glass elevators that rise through the center of their respective lobbies; talk about a view! I had to conquer my fear of heights, and elevators to ride them, and I'm glad I did.
Georgia is usually a lot warmer than the northern midwest. When I went there the first time a few years ago, I was looking forward to escaping the early January freeze. Ha! When we got to Atlanta it was 21(F) degrees and very windy. Oh well, return visits were much better.
The people seemed nice enough. The hills of northern Georgia are okay for scenery, but nothing spectacular. I have not been to any other areas of the state, so a general characterization would be unfair. I can proudly say that I would gladly go back. This time maybe I'll check out the southern reaches of the Appalachian Mountains or the beaches of historic Savannah.
7月10日 OK. I Give Up!Any help here? I keep doing this really cool "Battle of the Blogs" thing. I've put a lot of myself into my new blog, but I just can't seem to win a challenge.
So I humbly and sincerely ask you "Why?" What's missing? Is it the color, the content, my writing, my ego? Any help would be great. Why The Different Backgrounds?Just a quick note. Sticking with the Random Generation theme, I thought it would be fun to update the backgrounds from time to time. Hopefully the content will be thought of as varied and interesting. Look for something new soon. 7月9日 My World View?
What is Your World View? (updated) created with QuizFarm.com 7月8日 P~BuzzzYummmmm? Coming soon to a supermarket near you: "P~Buzzz". It's a carbonated peanut butter product. It is not a beverage, but rather a bread spread. The product was originally served at P-Nut Huts in eastern Georgia. Soon people were lining up to sample the fizzy concoction. "It's PB&J with a kick", claims Lee Gumay, the creator of P~Buzzz.
I can hardly wait. Spread the word. 7月7日 Whatever happened to...She was the 1990s(?) weight loss guru with short, blond, spiky hair. I was thinking about her at work today, in a non-Freudian way - I hope.
She always struck me as obnoxious, but she was a very welcome antithesis to Richard Simmons. (He also struck me as obnoxious, but in a very different way). I give both of them credit for every person that lost, and kept off, weight with their help.
One more thing. I know if it came down to it, I could win a fight against Richard Simmons, but I'm not so sure about Ms. Powter.
Well, time to 'stop the insanity' and end this post.
7月6日 1858Who: Lyman R. Blake
What: Invented a machine for sewing shoes
Where: New England(?) region, United States
When: July 6, 1858
Why: To make the mass production of shoes possible.
Why any of this matters today: Can you just imagine how expensive a pair of Nike's would cost if they had to be made by hand?
So please take a moment today to thank an unsung inventor of the Industrial Revolution.
7月4日 Wanna Submit To The Blogroll Alphabet?Random Generation(RG) is new, and I have not completed the A to Z Blogroll yet. So what? Well, the RG Blogroll will only have one entry per letter. The blogs listed may change, but will still be limited to only one per letter.
As you can see, there are only a few listed right now. If you would like to add any blogs you like, just send them along in the comment section.
Your suggestion(s) may make the list, or not. Either way your suggestion(s) could remain under the comments for many Random Generations to come. |
